What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage indicates how much of your total weight is made up of adipose tissue. It is a more accurate health indicator than weight or BMI alone because it differentiates between fat mass and lean mass (muscles, bones, organs, and water).
The US Navy Method
This method estimates body fat using circumference measurements. For men, waist and neck are used; for women, hip measurements are also included. The formula employs logarithmic calculations to derive body density and the resulting fat percentage.
Body Fat Classification
Essential fat: 2-5% men, 10-13% women. Athletic: 6-13% men, 14-20% women. Fit: 14-17% men, 21-24% women. Average: 18-24% men, 25-31% women. Obese: 25%+ men, 32%+ women.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I take the measurements?
Use a flexible tape measure. Measure the neck just below the Adam's apple, the waist at navel height, and the hips at the widest point. Stand upright and do not compress the tape.
How accurate is this method?
The US Navy method has an error margin of roughly 3-4%. For greater precision, methods like DEXA scanning or air displacement plethysmography are recommended.
