What Is Ideal Weight?
Ideal weight is an estimated weight range considered healthy for an individual based on their height, sex, and body frame. Because there is no single universally correct weight, several well-established medical formulas are used to calculate an approximate healthy range.
Formulas Used in This Calculator
This tool applies four recognized formulas: Devine (1974), the most widely used in pharmacology; Robinson (1983); Miller (1983); and Hamwi (1964). Each formula calculates a base ideal weight for a height of 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds an increment for every additional inch.
How to Read Your Results
The results show the ideal weight according to each formula as well as an overall range from the lowest to the highest value. A weight within this range is generally considered healthy, although it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ideal weight the same for men and women?
No. The formulas account for body composition differences between men and women, so the base values and per-inch increments differ for each sex.
Does ideal weight change with age?
The classic formulas do not directly factor in age, but body composition does change over the years. It is important to supplement this estimate with other measurements like BMI or body fat percentage.
